The <a href=\"https:\/\/gassnova.no\/en\/news\/the-milestone-of-milestones-in-longship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">initial CO2 volumes<\/a> were collected at the Heidelberg Materials cement plant in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brevikccs.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brevik<\/a>, transported by ship and stored 2.6 km below the seabed in the reservoir <em>Northern Lights<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember327\">The Norwegian government has funded approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regjeringen.no\/en\/documents\/meld.-st.-33-20192020\/id2765361\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80% of investment and operating costs over 10 years<\/a> for the entire chain, which also includes the waste-to-energy plant <a href=\"https:\/\/kommunikasjon.ntb.no\/pressemelding\/18397537\/karbonfangst-i-oslo-realiseres?publisherId=17848223&amp;lang=no\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hafslund Celsio<\/a>, whose collection facility is currently under construction. This government support has already enabled the launch of a second commercial phase, which is moving forward to serve international customers in Denmark (<a href=\"https:\/\/orsted.com\/en\/media\/news\/2023\/05\/20230515676011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00d8rsted<\/a>), in the Netherlands (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yara.com\/corporate-releases\/yara-invests-in-ccs-in-sluiskil-and-signs-binding-co2-transport-and-storage-agreement-with-northern-lights--the-worlds-first-cross-border-ccs-agreement-in-operation2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yara International<\/a>), in Sweden (<a href=\"https:\/\/norlights.com\/news\/northern-lights-is-expanding-capacity-through-commercial-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stockholm Exergi<\/a>) with the first shipments expected in late 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/afen.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_7812-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afen.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_7812-1.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/afen.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_7812-1-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/afen.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_7812-1-16x12.jpeg 16w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tour of Hafslund Celsio: Starting in 2029, Norway\u2019s largest waste-to-energy plant will capture 350,000 tons of CO2 per year for permanent storage in the North Sea.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ember491\">What are the implications for EDC in Europe?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember492\">\ud83d\udd39 <strong>Carbon management infrastructure as a catalyst for large-scale EDC:<\/strong> By providing a dedicated storage hub, Northern Lights will enable the generation of Europe\u2019s first large-scale negative emissions, both from incinerators (Hafslund Celsio) and biomass cogeneration plants (Denmark, Sweden). In early March, the first volumes of CO2 captured at the outlet of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inheritcarbonsolutions.com\/news\/inherit-enters-operation-with-worlds-first-carbon-removal-project-from-biogas-in-norway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Norwegian wastewater treatment plant<\/a> were also injected into the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember493\">\ud83d\udd39<strong>The crucial role<\/strong> <strong>voluntary markets:<\/strong> Jannicke Gerner Bjerk\u00e5s (Hafslund Celsio), Johan B\u00f6rje (Stockholm Exergi) and Kathrine H\u00f8eg Johansen (\u00d8rsted) were clear: their projects could not have been realized without the voluntary carbon market and advance purchase agreements with private buyers. As Jacob Bang (Microsoft) and Danny Broberg (Stripe) pointed out, expanding the buyer base requires strengthening the case for purchasing EDC\u2014particularly as a hedge against future market scarcity and for high-integrity \u00ab green claims\u00bb) of high integrity\u2014but this requires more robust standards on how these claims are formulated and recognized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"672\" src=\"https:\/\/afen.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_7766-1024x672.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afen.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_7766-1024x672.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/afen.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_7766-300x197.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/afen.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_7766-768x504.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/afen.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_7766-1536x1007.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/afen.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_7766-18x12.jpeg 18w, https:\/\/afen.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_7766.jpeg 1796w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Among buyers (Microsoft, Stripe), developers (Hafslund Celsio, Stockholm Exergi), and public policymakers (the Danish government), there is a unanimous conclusion: to scale up, the carbon removal market (EDC) must structure its demand.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember500\">\ud83d\udd39 <strong>The government must stay the course:<\/strong> Continued government support is needed now more than ever to stimulate demand for EDC. The <a href=\"https:\/\/bioenergyinternational.com\/soderenergi-pauses-beccs-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent cancellations<\/a> The cancellation of biogenic carbon capture projects in Sweden due to funding issues and the announced delays on projects in Norway serve as a reminder that the path to commercial viability is still a long one. Initiatives such as Norway\u2019s negative emissions tax, the integration of EDC into the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), and the development of European buyer consortia (<em>EU buyer\u2019s clubs<\/em>) are essential for stabilizing the market in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"ember501\">\ud83d\udd39<strong>Key knowledge transfers:<\/strong> As operational experience grows, sharing expertise will be vital\u2014from the design of capture projects to bilateral contract structures for CO2 transport, and the governance of EDC claims. Other European governments and project developers have much to learn from these pioneers.
