EDC & Regions: Methodology for the EDC AFEN Map by Region

Appendix on the methodological approach used in our report The Strength of Local Communities at the Heart of the EDC.

What the map shows

The card combines two pieces of information :

  1. A breakdown by region : green clear = low to green score dark = high score. This score reflects a «EDC potential» estimated at level of regional preparedness the implementation of CO₂ removal, based on available and comparable indicators in accordance with the AFEN methodology described below.
  2. “EDC Projects” items” : projects traceable within France (mainland France), marked as points of interest on the map.

Scope

Mainland France (13 regions, including Corsica).
Overseas territories are excluded at this stage.

How the regional score is calculated

The regional score (0–10) is calculated by aggregating three sub-scores, each of which is scored 0–6, then weighted:

  • Sequestration (40%)
  • Feedstock (40%)
  • Ecosystem (20%)

For complete details (criteria, scales, sources): download our Detailed Methodology.

How EDC projects are selected

The “EDC projects” sections are based on a list based on transparent inclusion criteria:

  • A strong presence in France,
  •  EDC Intention,
  •  Technology or semi-technology sector.

For complete details (criteria and list of selected projects): see List of EDC Projects and Inclusion Criteria.

Important notes (please read before interpreting)

The score for each region (shades of green) takes a broad approach, taking into account the resources and infrastructure available in each region for all EDC approaches, whether natural or technological. However, when it comes to identifying existing projects (mapped pictograms), we focus on the technological and semi-technological solutions : emerging solutions, which are still few in number, that will require a massive increase in scale by 2050 according to the goals of the SNBC 3.

The score is based in part on proxies (e.g., % of forest, % of UAA): these indicate territorial conditions, not an automatically “mobilizable” capacity.

Some elements are qualitative (CO₂ infrastructure, sector structuring): These are based on references in various public sources and documents (see list below) and are explained in the detailed methodology.

Signals related to CCUS (capture/transport/storage for decarbonization) are used as readiness indicators (infrastructure, “CO₂” initiatives), without being confused with EDC projects.
